urban hydrology

"Urban Hydrology' took shape as a response to its unfavorable site conditions. The site is located in East Boston, exposed to noise pollution from Logan Airport, air pollution from nearby processing plants, and water pollution that empties into Boston Harbor.

After an extensive site analysis phase, I developed six elements of taxonomy, as described in the video above. These elements formed the logic that I used to approach the site and allowed me to pull together different site systems.

My approach, in an attempt to mitigate further negative impacts & pollution, proposes to keep the existing Maverick Mills building on the site and retrofits the inside to accommodate new programmatic requirements. The other proposed structures and design moves across the site react and respond to this building and to the other site conditions. One of the key gestures in this project is the presence of water pulled in from the adjacent Chelsea Creek, transforming the site from a neglected hardscape into a landscaped destination.

The site sits in between two tall hill formations, creating a rather sizeable urban watershed condition.
